"I have really been impressed with the improvements in Doug's writing. He is writing more. Writing more descriptively, and portraying his old, gruff, crusty self very well. I hope to see this continue."

Outstanding Post Outstanding Post
Awarded Wed Jul 26th, 2017 @ 1:04am
Nominated by Lieutenant Commander Ina Nici
"Honor the Fallen was an awesome post with lots of great interaction from many characters. Nice job, all!"

"Honor the Fallen. This was a nice post to see how each person dealt with the death of one of their own. It showed a lot about each individual character."

"Honor the Fallen. A touching post with lots of brushes of character from everyone. "

"I feel that this post displays the very heart of Firebird. The coming together of a disparate group of entities to mourn the loss of a member. The connections that have grown between characters reflecting the connections between the players. If it is necessary to choose one person for the award, then I choose Luka who in her character has taken on the joys and sufferings of the crew in a singular person. As the Linguist she bridges the gaps between characters and gives the ship a central focus."

I'd like to add a little to this as well. I went and re-read this JP and it really has an emotional impact. The fact that the NPC who died was really an unknown before his death, makes it all the more powerful. Everyone added their part to the JP and it is incredibly emotional. I thank all of you for your efforts on this post. It really does represent each of us and the Firebird well.

Awarded Tue Dec 12th, 2017 @ 11:28pm
Nominated by Commander Yumi Han
Every family has a rough old codger who is at the same time embarrassing and beloved. I think that sums up Harlan. He grumbles about everything... almost everything, but he makes things happen. He is the backbone of the ship and his outstanding work as Assistant Chief of Engineering is worthy of recognition.
Captain's Personal Merit (Level 1) Captain's Personal Merit (Level 1)
Awarded Sat Feb 3rd, 2018 @ 3:17am
Nominated by Commander Yumi Han
Some of this I will have said in the Friday Musings this morning but it is no less relevant. Every story has a character that is wise due to many years of dealing with all the hurts and hardships the world throws their way. Harlan is certainly that character. He has served on TWELVE different ships of eight different classes. He represents a wealth of knowledge and he has been a wonderful character to have on the ship. He might be grumpy at times but he truly cares about the ship. OOC Doug has really shown a willingness to grow his character beyond where it started. He has honed his craft, allowing Harlan to develop into a more well rounded person. For his hard work, positive attitude and curmudgeonly love, I award Chief Petty Officer Arlan Harlan my Personal Merit.

"The mirror universe JPs were a lot of fun - Doug's work on these JPs got a lot of people excited. It's an interesting way to re-imagine our characters that adds depth to our "normal" Firebird personas."

"I really enjoyed Harlan's responses on the mirror universe post. I know it can be difficult writing two sides of the same character in the same post and he handled it with ease. Harlan's writing is generally great and I look forward to getting some JPs with him."

"I think he has added lots of value to the ship over the months and his work on the mirror universe has been awesome."

"Doug had a good month of writing and a lot of activity on Slack. He's ready to throw Harlan into any situation and I look forward to reading how he handles them. Doug has also been a constant on Slack, and has new things to share."

"Doug's presence and can-do attitude are critical to the success of the ship. He's always ready to jump in and his eagerness to write this past month has been welcome. Great job embracing the Mirror Universe setting and encouraging others to participate."

(February 2019) "Harlan continually goes above and beyond. He is a professional, if a cranky one. But he is also one of the glue guys that keeps things going when they are looking bad. He helps the crew function and is the lovable grumpy bear."

Crew's Choice Award (Level 1) Crew's Choice Award (Level 1)
Awarded Wed May 15th, 2019 @ 9:25pm
Nominated by Commander Yumi Han
(April 2019) "Doug does a great job of being active, writing lots of posts and chatting on slack. Despite having a character that is older and set his ways, its cool to see his character grow. He has done a great job this last month!"

"Definitely Harlan for me. Harlan developed from Jeffries Tube hermit to Chief Jeffries Tube hermit in Warrant Command school. His character developed, he finished 3 JPs, and he's been a constant on Slack in spite of his busy work schedule. This is the kind of involvement that keeps ships going."

"It has been really great to see how Harlan has changed over the past few months. He has stepped up to a role that I don't think most people would have pinned on him when he first came aboard the ship. And while he retains his curmudgeonly, tubes loving persona, he is also a leader in engineering."

"I expect to see great things out of Harlan in the future. I am excited to see how things go for him. Great job!"
Outstanding Post Outstanding Post

Nominated by Commander Yumi Han
(May 2019)

"Keeping Up With the Harlans was well-written to the point that I was outright surprised to learn how improvisational the actual collaborative writing of it was. (and this month was a tough one to pick just one Outstanding Post, mind you.) For a bunch of new characters who I had never seen before and might never see again, their dialogue and motives seemed more like those of a multigenerational North vs. South saga than the typical walk-on cameo roles of standard non-recurring NPCs. Keeping Up With the Harlans couldn't have been easy to write, but the writers made it look easy and inspiring."

"Keeping Up With the Harlans A very entertaining look into the life of a great character."

"There were several standout posts in the interlude, but meeting Harlan's family was a revelation into how he came to be who he is and how much of that is rooted in where he came from. I like to see a piece of every crew member's family at least once, and this was a surprising one."

"It is hard to take a character, a long-established character, and show a new aspect that is fresh and surprising. Harlan's family was completely unexpected, in a good way. This interlude really brought out a lot in Harlan's background. The reactions of his family and the obvious impact it has had on his life were revealing. Well done!"
