Personality & Traits
General Overview | Kaelen Voss has loved fixing things for as long as he can remember. As a child, he spent more time taking machines apart and putting them back together than playing with toys. His father, a Starfleet engineer, inspired Kaelen to join Starfleet, where he could apply his talents. His hands-on experience with complex machinery gave him a reputation as someone who can work, fix if something needs fixing, under the most difficult of circumstances. Kaelen approaches life with a practical mindset—if something’s broken, he’ll figure out a way to fix it. His philosophy applies not just to machines but also to situations and people. While Kaelen is serious about his work, he keeps his demeanor light and enjoys small moments of humor with his colleagues. However, he often struggles with work-life balance, finding it hard to step away from his responsibilities. Motto / Philosophy “If it’s broken, it can be fixed. If it can’t be fixed, we’ll make it work.” |

Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: Exceptional Problem Solver: Kaelen thrives in chaotic situations, applying quick thinking and technical ingenuity to solve critical problems. Dedicated and Relentless: He has a strong sense of duty, often working tirelessly to ensure everything is functioning perfectly. Adaptable: Kaelen’s experience with different systems makes him highly flexible—he can improvise repairs with limited resources under extreme conditions. Weaknesses: Work-Life Imbalance: Kaelen is often consumed by his work, to the point of neglecting rest and social relationships. Reluctant to Delegate: He has difficulty trusting others to handle repairs, which can lead to burnout and frustration. Informal Approach: While effective, his casual style sometimes irritates higher-ranking officers who expect strict adherence to protocol. |
|
Ambitions | Kaelen’s long-term goal is to continue in Starfleet, building his expertise in engineering systems and contributing to critical missions. However, he often hopes to command a ship one day. Although he has a vague notion of starting a family one day, his career always comes first, and he hasn’t actively pursued that dream. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Tinkering with Alien Technology: Kaelen enjoys reverse-engineering alien devices, driven by curiosity about how different species design their systems. Holodeck Programs: He likes running catastrophic engineering scenarios to practice his damage control skills, much to the amusement—and occasional annoyance—of his crewmates. Astrophotography: In his downtime, Kaelen captures stunning images of stars and nebulae. Classic Media: He has a fondness for 20th-century TV shows like The Twilight Zone and enjoys reading old engineering manuals |
Personal History | Kaelen Voss – Backstory Kaelen Voss was born in 2362 on Titan Colony, a hub of technological innovation orbiting Saturn. He grew up in a family devoted to engineering and public service. His father, Titus Lucius Voss, was a Starfleet engineer aboard the U.S.S. Light Tower, a deep-space exploration vessel. His mother, Alexandria Maxwell-Voss, served as an environmental systems engineer on Titan, helping maintain life support systems essential to the colony’s survival. His older brother, Denver Lucius Voss, now works in the Federation civilian government as Deputy Councilor of Education. Curiosity and Early Life From a young age, Kaelen was fascinated by how things worked. His parents nurtured his curiosity, encouraging him to explore and question the world around him. One memory stands out from Kaelen’s childhood—his mother told him, “Explore your curiosities. Ask the necessary questions. Don’t take answers at face value. Experiment, evaluate, and find the truth.” This advice became a guiding principle in his life. Kaelen loved disassembling and reassembling gadgets and spent most of his childhood immersed in engineering projects. Even in elementary school, his teachers were impressed by his ability to run complex experiments—often proving upon established theories. He wasn’t satisfied until he’d solved a problem. Outside of engineering, Kaelen enjoyed reading and writing short stories. His favorite character was Sherlock Holmes, whose methodical approach to solving mysteries inspired Kaelen’s own problem-solving mindset. Holmes’s influence also made Kaelen a sharp observer of people and systems—skills that would later define his career. High School Years and Wrestling In 2377, Kaelen enrolled in Titan High School, where he discovered a love for wrestling. He trained under Yuko Oslo, an Olympic-level coach and friend of his father. Yuko’s mentorship taught Kaelen discipline, perseverance, and the importance of strategic thinking—qualities that complemented his engineering skills. Kaelen competed throughout high school, earning several accolades, including three bronze and one silver regional medal. While Kaelen was a capable student, academics didn’t captivate him the way machines did. He completed assignments on time and passed his exams, but he never aimed to be top of the class. For him, the real learning took place in workshops, experiments, and competitions. A Change in Plans Kaelen initially planned to study engineering off-world after high school. However, tragedy struck when his father, Titus, passed away suddenly just months before Kaelen’s graduation. Titus’s death deeply affected the Voss family, especially Kaelen’s mother, Alexandria. She suffered from mental health challenges and was temporarily admitted to a care facility. Kaelen decided to remain on Titan and provide home care for his mother, putting his ambitions on hold. Instead of attending an off-world university, Kaelen enrolled in Starfleet Academy in 2380, where he could continue his studies while staying close to his family. Starfleet Academy and Career Beginnings Kaelen’s time at Starfleet Academy was marked by hands-on learning. He chose to specialize in general engineering and specialize in damage control, excelling in courses that involved practical problem-solving under pressure. Much like in high school, Kaelen didn’t strive to be top of his class. Instead, he focused on mastering the skills he would need in the field. His mother passed away in 2382, just two years before his graduation. Although her loss weighed heavily on him, Kaelen found solace in his work, dedicating himself to the path of a Starfleet engineer. In 2384, Kaelen graduated from Starfleet Academy and was commissioned as an Ensign. His first assignment was aboard the U.S.S. Thunderchild, where he worked on general ship systems and emergency repairs. Over time his talent for rapid problem-solving and engineering improvisation improved and his work truly shined. Promotion and Injury In 2391 Kaelen was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade (JG) and transferred to the U.S.S. Horizon, an Intrepid-class vessel exploring deep space. As part of the engineering crew, Kaelen was responsible for maintaining key systems and leading damage control efforts during emergencies. His calm demeanor and ability to keep systems operational during crises earned him a reputation as a reliable officer. During a routine mission in 2374, Kaelen suffered a severe injury while repairing an overloaded plasma conduit. The explosion left him with several burns and fractures, requiring extensive rehabilitation. Although his physical recovery was swift, Kaelen struggled with the mental toll of the incident. The near-death experience forced him to confront his own vulnerabilities—a difficult lesson for someone who had always relied on his competence to solve problems. Return to Service and Current Role After a few years of therapy and recovery, Kaelen returned to duty aboard the Horizon. He resumed his role as damage control specialist, where he continues to lead the charge in keeping the ship operational under the most challenging conditions. His experiences have only deepened his passion for engineering, and he has become known for his ability to improvise solutions on the fly, even with limited resources. Though Kaelen is a natural problem-solver, his laid-back and informal style sometimes puts him at odds with more traditional officers. He tends to push boundaries when it comes to protocol, believing that results matter more than rules. Despite this, his dedication to his crew and his work is never in question. |
