Mission: Interlude 4
Location: USS Firebird - Various
Timeline: 19 February, 2395 - 1400 Hours

Ensign Jinto Temo sat aboard the Runabout USS Amazon from Deep Space Nine to Empok Nor. He had asked no less than five times to get on the controls, but the Lieutenant shot him down each time. As Empok Nor came up on the main view screen. Temo looked over at Lieutenant Maria Gonzalez and asked, "Ma'am if you won't let me bring her in could you at least bring us in close to the Firebird. I want to see what I'm working with."

Maria looked over at the young Ensign and remembered her first duty assignment. "You promise to stay in your chair until we've docked and I'll take us on a pass around her."

"Yes ma'am," Temo replied his childlike anxiety written all over his face.

As the Runabout swooped around the station the USS Firebird came into view. For a second Temo was frozen in awe. She didn't have the traditional Starfleet Ship Profile, but that meant she was fast, she was really fast. Maria looked over at Temo and smiled, she could tell he was breathing heavy. "That's a lot of ship you sure you can handle her?"

Temo almost didn't hear the question he was fixated on the war nacelles tucked away while the ship was docked. "I'm sorry ma'am did you ask me something."

"Alright Ensign, I'm going give you the Conn, but mind the hull."

Temo snapped back to reality sitting up in his chair, "Yes ma'am, I'll be gentle." He couldn't hide his excitement or the smile on his face.

It hadn't take long for Temo to reach the Firebird and he wasn't wasting anytime. He located the Captain in his Ready Room and made his way to the bridge. As the turbolift doors opened to a bridge with a skeleton crew on it, he couldn't help but located the Conn. This would be his station right in front of the viewscreen, the chair was empty. No need for a pilot on a docked ship, but he was already looking over the controls. Making his way over to the Captain's Ready Room, Temo felt his heart race as he touched the door chime.

Malcom sighed, leaned back on his couch and put his feet up on the small table that sat between his seat and two chairs. He put the PADD he'd been holding on the couch and sighed again.

"Come in," he said. He had no idea who it was. Kipp, the layabout, had taken leave to visit his fiance. His yeoman hadn't taken leave since coming aboard the ship. Malcom was dying a death of a thousand requisition forms and required reports. Maybe it was an emergency and he could responsibly ignore those admin duties he hated so much.

Temo strode into the Captian's Ready Room with all the swagger of a hotshot pilot. "Sir, Ensign Jinto Temo reporting for duty. I'll be your new flight officer." The adrenaline from meeting his first commanding officer was flowing through his veins and his heart was racing. This is where Temo felt at home. He handed the Captain a PADD with his orders and snapped his feet together in the position of attention.

Malcom took the PADD, another of the damn things, and perused it. He'd no idea that Ensign Temo was going to arrive today.

"Cadet Commander of Omega One Squadron, huh?" Malcom said. He looked up at the young Bajoran. "You know, I applied to Omega One and they turned me down. Said I wasn't disciplined enough. But I'm looking at your evaluation reports and I'm wondering if I have inherited someone who thinks flying a starship is like flying in Omega One?"

Temo looked at the Captain and wondered if he knew anything about motorcycles. "It's the difference between riding a Ducati 1098S or a Custom Built Harley Davidson Road King. One takes a lot more intuition." Temo smiled. So the Captain was a pilot. This will be fun, thought Temo to himself. "I've flown a Dilligent Class in simulations Sir. I just hope she's as responsive in real life."

"I have no idea what a Ducati is, ensign. However, I can tell you that the Firebird is the most agile, maneuverable ship I've ever flown. I also have no intention of letting you fly her until I am satisfied that you are capable of doing so, regardless of how much simulation time you have. Fortunately, your predecessor, Lieutenant Smith, is still onboard. He's now our Chief Intelligence Officer. I'm going to have him give you an orientation check flight. If he says you are good to go, then you are. If not, I will have him conduct remedial training," Malcom said. He watched the young ensign closely to see how he would react to the snub.

Remedial training, thought Temo to himself. "Understood Sir. I'm sure I'll be just fine. I've looked at her specs and even looked at what you've done during the refit. The Firebird's controls look very sensitive. I'm sure it will take some adjustment, but that's my specialty. Your ship is in good hands, Sir. I'll show you."

"I look forward to seeing what you can do, ensign. I'm not shy about having young officers take on big responsibility. I certainly had that opportunity when I was a young officer and it served me well. What questions do you have about the ship or the crew?" Malcom asked. He liked the ensign's confidence. All pilots needed to have it in order to achieve their best results.

"Honestly Sir," Temo thought for a second. "This is my first fleet assignment. I'm just eager to get out there and see the stars. What better place to do it from then front and center at the conn?" Temo looked around the small office of the Captain. "I could have chosen any open Flight Control assignment and I've been led to this ship Sir. I know this is where I belong." Temo instinctively rubbed his ear where the Prylar Jotem had squeezed so many times before to check his pagh.

"I'm glad to hear it," Malcom said with a smile. "The Firebird is a small family. I'm lucky to be her captain. We've been through some intense missions but always come out on top. Well, except for when we crashed and almost destroyed the ship. But we did get a nice refit out of that." Malcom laughed. "There are a lot of great crewmembers that you can learn from. I know your primary responsibility is the conn but make an effort to visit and get to know as many people and departments as you can."

Temo laughed, "I'll do my best not to crash her again, sir. I'll definitely get around to all the departments. Thank you for the warm welcome, sir. I won't let you down." Temo smiled at his new commanding officer. "Unless there is anything else perhaps I will look for Lieutenant Smith. The quicker I get his approval the quicker you'll let me have the Conn."

"Cary on, Mr. Jinto," Malcom said, reaching for the PADD once more. A captain's duty was never finished.

I think Malcolm secretly loves the administrative responsibilities of being captain and doesn't want to admit it.
