Mission: Mission 2: Echoes of the Dominion
Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: 30 March, 2394 - 2200 Hours

The replicators would not make coffee. Malcom stood on the turbolift, waiting for it to open. It did not open. He looked up at the display, which was flashing on and off, and saw that he was at deck four. How long have I been standing here he thought. He reached out to touch the doors and just before he made contact the sprang open. He stepped off, expecting to be trapped by the closing doors but nothing happened.

A crewman in yellow was kneeling about ten feet down the hallway. She was dark haired with streaks of white but her face was smooth and looked like porcelain. Her eyes spoke of long hours of work with little sleep and no sign of reprieve. He tried to remember her name but came up empty. Chief Stephens would know. He made a mental note to check in with the chief.

"How goes it, crewman," Malcom asked. Her face softened.

"It's... busy, sir," she said. "Not that I am complaining," she continued in a slightly panicked voice.

Malcom nodded. "Don't worry. I know how much there is to do. Just do your best and let your supervisor know when you can't stay awake anymore. I don't need my people getting hurt at this stage in the game."

She glanced down and started to smile but instead broke into a huge yawn, which she only partially was able to hide with her smudged hand. "Sorry, sir,"

"Carry on, crewman," Malcom said and walked past. A moment later he entered main engineering.

Rhesha had finally gotten the list of things to fix down to "Barely Manageable." The foreign AI hadn't actually caused that much physical damage. He was chagrined to find that his efforts to shut down the self-destruct, although necessary, had done more actual damage than the AI had. Now he was left with computer glitches ranging from door sensor delays to a rather nasty power fluctuation in the environmental controls on deck four. He glanced up from the console he was working on and saw the Captain. Given the earliness of the hour, the lack of coffee was strange.

"Having problems with your replicator Captain?"

Am I that obvious? "It depends on what your definition of problem is I suppose. Doctor Haadok would say that this is a benefit to my longevity as the negative biological factors of consuming too much coffee are a clear and evident threat to my health," Malcom said as he approached the Chief of Engineering. He leaned against the console that Rhesha was standing behind. "But between you and me, Rhesha, this is a serious problem. I rank it just behind replacing the warp core in order of priority."

Rhesha smiled and pointed towards a thermos sitting a few feet away.

"I'm not going to say that my first priority was my office replicator, but that was the first system to be officially determined free of Margaret bugs."

Malcom rubbed his hands together. "I knew you were the right Andorian for the job, Rhesha." He walked over to the replicator and ordered a cup of coffee, Vulcan brew, extra dark, extra sweet. He cupped it in his hands and let the smell waft over him. He blew on it softly, looking over the edge of the cup at his chief engineer. "Alright, chief, lay it on me. What are we looking at in terms of getting things operational?"

Rhesha blew out a long breath.

"It's not to terrible. I can have us under impulse power within the next few hours, and basic warp capability in the next day or so." He paused and grabbed the PADD that he had been working on.

"Smaller issues are going to keep coming up until I figure out the extent of the damage that Fantome and the AI caused. That being said, it's not the worst shape I've ever seen a ship. Hell, it isn't even the worst shape that Firebird has been in."

That made Malcom laugh. "We are scratching her up pretty badly for the limited time we've had her." He took a drink of the coffee, letting the scent wash over him. "I'll never complain about replicated coffee again. This is really good. Did you do something to it? Anyways, it's good to know that she's not going to break apart on us. Part of me was afraid Fantome had left something... unfortunate hidden away. Is there anything I can do to make your work easier?"

Looking back at the PADD Rhesha thought about the project that was ahead of him. Although a few extra hands might have made the work go more quickly, he also knew that everyone had their own areas of work to focus on.

"I suppose the only thing that would really help is if people are good about reporting the weird stuff that they are experiencing. The computer is bound to spit out some strange problems over the next few weeks."

"Very well. I'll make sure that any reports Kipp receives that involved issues like that are forwarded to you as well. I'll also make sure that the department heads are in daily contact with you, even if it is just to say everything is normal. Which would be great." He took another drink. "And I need you to keep a close eye on your staff. Harlan and Lopt and all the rest will put the ship's well being above themselves. Order them to their quarters if they start swaying side to side."

Rhesha nodded at that. He had fought once with Harlan about overworking himself. He made sure to add checking the schedule to his list.

"Understood sir. Anything else?"

Even though he knew that these were good conversation to have, there was still the sense that it was taking time away from the things that needed doing.

Malcom knew a polite brush off when he heard one and he had a lot of other places to be. "No. Thanks, chief. For everything." He turned and strode out of engineering. I need to find Jackson he thought.

LOL at the priority list for repairs. 1. Coffee. 2. Warp core. Like "Circle the Wagons" this was a nice summary of what happened and launch forward to what's next. Rhesha and his team have a lot of work ahead of them!
