Sitting On Laurels [CD]

Posted on Mon Aug 19th, 2019 @ 6:51pm by Captain Jack Cunningham Jr & Master Sergeant Robert Schiano & Corporal Eileen Saddler & Lance Corporal Damian Quigley & Private 1st Class Quentin Wilks & Private Mark Collins

Mission: Mission 5: Arising From the Ashes
Location: Marine Barracks - Deck 6
Timeline: 10 February, 2394 - 1900 Hours

Robert had read up on the Firebird's current mission and saw that there was no need for the Marines on this mission. Well at least there was no need for them on the surface. However, he knew that the only bad Marine was an idle Marine so he summoned everyone to the Barracks for an impromptu briefing.

"Hey everyone listen up, and I hope the El T does not mind me calling you all here. When we were assigned to a ship we all knew that there would be days like this one. Days when we would not be needed to complete the mission. As such I say that we need to be ready for anything at all times. Today we hit the holodeck and train." He spoke once everyone was there and sitting down.

PFC Wilks grunted. "Oh, now it makes sense. Saddler gets to go off flying around with Lieutenant Smith and we're going to hit the holodeck and much around in the mud."

Gunny Phillips, a veteran of numerous ships and stations gave Wilks a hard stare. "Wilks, you been in the Corps for a hot minute. Saddler has kicked ass on two tours of combat and your ass on every exercise mat on this ship. That plus the fact that she's our trained EVAC pilot means that when the chief flight control officer needs a co-pilot, she's the one who goes. You got a problem with that?"

Wilks crossed his arms and sat back in his char. "No, gunny. No problem."

Private Collins, the team sniper, grinned as he looked at the first sergeant. "Are we going to be humping in the mud, top?"

"Actually we have something unique and special planned for youze. We are going on a serve and protect mission. We will be tasked with protecting a high ranking official. However, I think the El T has more on dat." He turned a stern glare toward Wilks. "To further what the Gunny has said. When a Marine is assigned to a ship, that Marine is at the disposal of the ship's company. We show them that we are more than grunts and we do their job and often do it better. That is what the Corporal is assigned to today." Schiano stepped to the side when he finished speaking to allow Cunningham to take over.

Jack looked up from his PADD. He'd perfected the ability to be in a room full of Marines and not be in the room until it was time to take control. He wanted them to be able to be themselves and on a small ship that was hard sometimes. He also didn't want to step on his NCOs' feet.

"Thank you, First Sergeant," Jack said as he stood up. "First I want to tag onto one thing that top said. We are going to have times like this on the Firebird. I don't see any need for a bunch of hard-charging Marines at a sceince research station with eight or nine people. I mean, I think there is a Klingon over there but even the security team can handle one Klingon," Jack said and paused. True to form, the Marines laughed. He let it settle and then went on.

"However, we all know that things can go bad in a hurry. Enemies strike when least expect it. That's just good tactics. So to combat that, we have to be prepared and that means training. Now, I know that some of you," Jack said and stared at PFC Wilks, are worried about marching in the mud. Well, we won't be doing that this time, but we certainly will in the near future. This time," Jack said and turned to the large screen behind him. He tapped it and it came to life. "We are going to work on some of our close personal protection duties."

The screen showed a high altitude image of a string of gray-green islands, arcing in a gentle curve towards a larger island that was shaped like a smashed circle. The ocean around the entire island chain was blue-green. Jack touched the screen again and the image zoomed forward towards the largest Island, focusing on the southernmost tip, which held a medium-sized port city.

"Gentlemen, this is Harken. Harken is a single planet system ruled jointly by the Medrin and the Undrin. The Medrin are a land-based, bipedal humanoid life-form. They reside on these islands primarily, although they have extensive mining operations at both poles. They achieved warp technology fifteen years ago and the Federation conducted first contact procedures. Since then, we have been in regular contact with them, assisting as they require."

"We going on a publicity tour, sir?" Collins asked. Ever since his adventures back on the Refam planet, he'd been a lot less shy about talking to the upper command staff.

Jack shook his head. "Not quite. Unfortunately, after we made first contact, we learned that the Undrin are an entirely different species. They live in the ocean and have a much larger footprint." Jack touched the screen again and a swath of yellow dots spread out around the planet. "The Undrin are actually much more populous. And they have no interest in changing their ancient society. The friction between the Medrin and the Undrin has been rising and there are splinter groups of the Undrin who are advocating violence. As you can see, this is a very delicate situation. The Medrin have asked the Federation to participate in mediation between the two groups. We will be providing security for the top negotiators," Jack said. He turned and looked at the group. "What are your questions?"

The wheels in Schiano's head began to turn, he was mentally getting the lay of the land and figuring out ways in and out. "Sir, where is the meeting to take place. I mean with one race living on land and the other in the sea. It might be hard to find neutral ground." He said in his accented voice. If the meeting was to be underwater that could create a nightmare for the security measures. he thought.

Jack nodded at his First Sergeant's question. "Good question. Preliminary negotiations were able to get the Undrin to agree to a meeting on an uninhabited island. It is a speck of rock really. I have no idea how the underwater Undrin will attend but that's what our orders indicate," Jack said.

Gunny Phillips stood up. "Sir, you mentioned possible violence. Can I take that to mean that some faction of these Undrin are planning to cause trouble?"

"We're hoping that isn't the case, gunny. But they aren't sending Marines down there because they expect a social party to break out. We are going in locked and loaded, with our heads on a swivel. I want everyone ready to go in one hour. First Sergeant, get it done," Jack said and walked out of the room.

"Sir yes, Sir!" Schiano replied to Jack. "You heard the man nacelles up in one hour. Get movin' lets kick the tires and light the fires."

"[...] even the security team can handle one Klingon" - Don't ever let Rhiana hear such a comment. :)
On second thought, maybe she should do some training with the Marines one day.

In any case, I'm curious to read the follow-up for this post!
