Jacques slumped in the captain's chair. He'd discovered that it wasn't comfortable at all. At least not for him. He'd tried to warn off Jackson and the rest of his gang but they'd managed to board anyway. Margaret had also given him regular updates on the state of their captives.

Everything was falling apart. And then the ship dropped out of warp. Jacques sprang to his feet. "Margaret, what happened?"

=^=Main engineering has shut down the warp drive.=^=

He growled. "I thought you said the gas would keep them out of action for a long time?"

Margaret paused. =^=Sensors indicate that unexpected personnel were in engineering when the gas was introduced. One of those personnel proved highly resistant.=^=

"Can we gas them again?"

=^=Negative. The canisters you installed in the air system have been depleted.=^=

"Fine. Lets transport everyone to the holodeck. They can all just wait there.=^=

=^=Negative. The power necessary to do so is not available. All forcefields have been deactivated except the one around the bridge. Firebird crew are free."

Jacques let his head fall. His attempt had failed. "I...I don't know what to do."

=^= Jacques we must institute the failsafe. My program and the records contained in the skinmorph must not be captured by Starfleet=^=

Jacques walked forward until he stood in front of the main viewscreen. It was now filled with all the stars in the sector. He reached up and touched the star near Bajor. Near the wormhole. Near home. His face hardened. He turned around, nodding.

"Margaret, prepare the failsafe program but do not initiate. We have one last thing we can try," he said. "Open a channel shipwide."

=^=Channel Open=^=

Jacques took a deep breath. "Attention, crew of the Firebird this is Lieutenant Jacques Fantome of the USS Monterey. I regret that up to this point I have been untruthful to all of you. You... you are a good crew. I am sorry to have done the things I had to do. I require that you all return to the locations in which you were previously held. If you do not, I will be forced to resort to extreme measures."

=^="Stand down, Fantome, and let us help you. The fight is lost or you wouldn't warn us.=^=

"You think this is a lost fight? I haven't even used my biggest card yet, Mr. Soto. If you don't cooperate, I will destroy this ship. You have five minutes."

Jacques felt a swirl of emotions. He truly liked the crew. Working with them, he had been able for a time, to forget all the horrible things that had been done to him and the rest of the crew of the Monterey. But now he had no options left. They would never really help him. They would call him a traitor, taunt him, refuse to believe his story and in the end he would disappear down a deep hole and his family would die.

=^=Jacques, would you like me to initiate the self destruct?=^=

He paused and then spoke in a rush. "Do it. But... have it stop at 30 seconds. I don't think I can really blow it up."

Margaret accepted the command but a sub-command from a super-user, long programmed into her, overrode Jacques order to set a fail safe at 30 seconds.

=^=Self Destruct Sequence Initiated.=^=

Jacques slumped back down into the command chair. They would come for him. He knew it.

A "super-user"? Grr, we must catch them, too!

Poor, Jacques...

There is great tension throughout this scene and I like the setup between Fantome and Margaret here, and it falls during just the right beat in the overall story. Well done, sir.
