Mission: Mission 2: Echoes of the Dominion
Location: Runabout
Timeline: 30 March, 2394 - 1400 Hours

=^=Thank you for the clearance, Empok Nor. This is runabout Coral Sea departing.=^= Malcom said and then toggled the comms off. He sighed and glanced over at his second officer who was tapping furiously at her console.

"Where is she?" He asked

Nici looked over her console defeated, "I was able to get there warp trail Sir, but they have at least a half an hour head start on a faster ship. Hopefully the Ensigns can get there and stall so we can get back there in time. We are ready for launch Sir." Nici looked back at the station and off to the route and a knot in her gut told her something wrong was about to happen.

"I understand, lieutenant. All we can do is chase her at this point. But I'm not going to just wait around and watch my ship run off to god knows where," Malcom said. He pushed the throttle forward and the Coral Sea launched from the exterior pad. Empok Nor Ops had opened a wide path for him in the direction that the Firebird had taken. He increased speed to maximum impulse before he should have but he didn't care. The shuttle hummed under his fingers, the engines warming to their task as Malcom cut all the corners he could. He was an old pro with the runabout and he knew the strengths, weaknesses and tricks when piloting it. He disengaged all the engine safeties, setting an alert for when they achieved 120% of nominal output.

They raced forward, breaking the safe warp threshold faster than Fantome and the Firebird had. He pulled in Nici's data on the warp trail and matched their course to it.

"Entering Warp," he said and the viewport blurred. Malcom sighed and looked over to his co-pilot and second officer. "Did you get anything on the sensors? Did Jackson make it on board?"

Jackson, thought Nici to herself scanning the console in front of her. "I hope Sir, but it looks like the data here is inconclusive." Nici looked at the power readout on the small runabout. She had learned the power systems for these small vessels when she was still a cadet but she hadn't messed with one for a while. "Sir, if I remember correctly we, if we disengaged the safeties and transfer all power to our warp field I may be able to create a bubble that will withstand warp 7. It's all about the perfect balance between power to the deflectors creating our warp field and power to the engines for an extra push. The problem is I'd have to disengage life support, not enough power on these old Danubes."

Malcom didn't even pause. "Do it. Whatever it takes to get this tub moving faster. I'd tear out stuff and throw it outside if it would make a difference." He plotted a course correction. "Looks like they are headed to DS9."

DS9, doesn't make sense, thought Nici. There was to much of a Starfleet presence there. "Oh no Sir," said Nici. "I think Mr. Fantome is planning on taking the Firebird through the wormhole. We need to try and get a coded message to DS9 that Mr. Fantome won't be able to intercept."

"Good call. You worry about the warp bubble, I will get the message out. I'll use my old academy codes. They are still active. Fantome won't recognize them at all. At the very least, they can get the Defiant up and ready to go," Malcom said. He watched Nici for a few moments, making sure that she wasn't distracted and then typed out a brief message to the DS9 commander. "Come on, crew," he said under his breath.

Nici sighed with relief. It felt good not being the one having to make the decisions and having a Captain that listened when you found a new problem. She had been in the Captain's chair when the Firebird last went through the Celestial Temple. She just hoped they could make it before she did again. Through all of that Nici found the power needed and turned off all the safeties on the warp deflectors. The warp bubble of the Coral Sea was closer to that of a Wallace class then of a runabout and they leveled off at Warp 7.2.

"I've got her to Warp 7.2, Sir," Nici said. "At this rate we should be reaching DS9 a half hour behind the Firebird, Sir. I've had to shut off life support we have about 10 hours of air so it might be best we keep the chatter down to a minimum."

"Why is it everyone finds ingenious ways to tell me to shut up?" Malcom said with a smile. "Am I really that bad?" He took a few minutes to examine their path, checking for spacial anomalies or reported wreckage. Finding it clear, he leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. "I use less oxygen when I sleep. So. You're in charge for a while." With that, he squirmed once to get comfortable and immediately fell into a deep sleep.

Nici looked over at the man sleeping next to her and smiled. He could sleep with his ship having been hijacked. He could rest when his crew may be in danger. The level of confidence in the rest of the crew must have been insane.

[One Hour Later]

Malcom's eyes snapped open. "Report."

The shuttle had just dropped out of warp. The air had grown stale from the life support being shut off as Nici readjusted power settings fresh air pushed into the Cabin. Nici pressed a few more buttons and turned to the Captain, "The Firebird has dropped out of warp. She's on screen, Sir. It looks like the crew was able to stop her."

Malcom ran a scan of the ship and frowned. "It looks like they ejected the warp core. I'm also getting some weird residual energy readings. Let me access the computer." He was glad to see that the shuttle's computer tied in with the Firebird but he whistled at the response. "Massive damage to the main computer. Lets see if I can get the shuttlebay to open."

For a moment it looked like nothing would happen. He could tell that the fusion reactors that ran the impulse engines were straining to handle the emergency power draw. They floated for a minute, then two. Finally the shuttlebay door began creeping open.

"I guess we know who is in charge. Fantome must be in custody. Or worse." He spared a glance at Nici and moved the shuttle inside the ship. He set them down with his customary gracefulness.

"Lets go see what kind of mess we have to deal with, shall we?"

Nici saw the same reports of the main computer damaged. She dreaded the hours of work that it would require to repair it. I hope everyone is ok, thought Nici. "I'm ready when you are," said Nici as she engaged thrusters to take them into the airlock.

Man, I wish I could take a nap like the Captain does, ha! I love seeing these two characters interact so much with each other and people outside of the ship. It makes the galaxy feel larger to have people outside the crew work with you two to get you back aboard.
