Mission: Mission 2: Echoes of the Dominion
Location: Firebird- Various
Timeline: 30 March, 2394 - 1415 Hours

Keith Potter held his phaser tightly, his hands sweaty and his breathing rapid. The ship sounded so quiet now that they had dropped out of warp. Behind him he heard the heavy footfalls of Olaf. He paused at a junction of two corridors and looked back over his shoulder.

"Can you please try to be more quiet, Olaf? I don't know what trapped us in the gym but I'd rather not sit in there for a couple more hours," Keith said and gestured at the exercise clothes he wore. "Also, I wish I'd brought my uniform to springball practice."

Petty Officer 3rd Class Olaf Olafson looked at the crewman who appeared a little shaken up, "I'm sorry crewman, but my 6'2" frame wasn't meant for silence." Olaf looked down at his legs and began making cartoonish tippy toe gestures. He felt embarrassed but Olaf had never learned to sneak. Most of the time he relied on his stature to intimidate his opponent in combat and wasn't much for subtle movements. Olaf was extremely graceful for his size, but had never really learned to have a light foot.

Keith shook his head and looked back at the junction. "What do you think? Left or right? Or do we want to take a jeffries tube?" Both directions looked the same. They'd taken the jeffries tubes from Deck 5 to Deck 4 and Keith wasn't sure where to go.

Meanwhile, Chief Science Officer Laree Desai was making her way silently as a spider from the doors to Main Engineering to the jeffries tubes. As she was about to turn a corner she felt more than heard the thuds of a great giant walking, accompanied by whispered arguing. She froze, flattened herself against a wall (like that would help in a hallway with no cover) and looked at the tricorder in her hand. Humans, identified as Petty Officer 3rd Class Olaf Olafson and Crewman Keith Potter, both security officers aboard the Firebird. She didn't know either of them, and had no idea if they were part of the conspiracy or not. She dropped to a crouch and cautiously peaked around the corner, just long enough for a glimpse before she pulled her head back.

The two crewmen--a blond giant and an advertising model--were dressed in sweaty gym clothes, holding shaky phasers, arguing and looking extremely lost. Desai decided they were too ridiculous a pair to be part of the conspiracy. So she stood up and announced herself in a loud whisper as she turned the corner, hands in the air. Those phasers looked jumpy and she didn't want to get shot by her own guys. "Chief Science Officer Lieutenant Laree Desai." She risked full volume: "Ten-HUT!" She had no idea if it would work, but she snapped to attention and hoped their Starfleet programming would kick in, too. She was ready to dive back around the corner if those phaser hands twitched.

The instinct to obey the command was hard-wired into both of the crewmen. They snapped to attention as if the lieutenant was a puppet master, pulling on their strings. "Crewman Keith Potter, ma'am," he said. "Glad to see we aren't the only ones on this ship. What's going on?"

Olaf stood at attention eyes floating off in front of him. "Normally they make an announcement before departing a station. Do you know where we are going Ma'am?"

"At ease, gentlemen." Desai relaxed herself. She wasn't going to get shot by her own guys, and those phasers and the men holding them were going to come in handy. "There are intruders on this ship. Our best guess is that they've taken the Bridge." She looked the two crewmen up and down and smiled. "You gentlemen are going to help me take back the Firebird."

Keith and Olaf looked and one another and then their faces became grim. This was was they trained for. What they had fought for on Quinor VII. The ship was their family and the would not let family down.

"How do you want to get there, ma'am," Keith asked.

"We'll take the jeffries tubes to Deck One and from there to the Bridge. Olafson, take point. Potter, behind me. I'll fill you in on the way," Desai said and motioned them towards an access hatch halfway down the corridor. Potter nodded and trotted over to the hatch and pulled it open. He ducked his head inside and then stood back up.

"Looks good, Olaf. After you"

Olaf scampered into the jeffries tube before his science officer phaser in hand. His large frame made it seem odd as he scuttled forward quicker than a man his size should have been able to. Reaching the first junction Olaf looked over his shoulder and smiled, "It looks clear at least to here."

Desai followed Olafson into the cramped tunnel, thankful both that she was relatively small and that she wasn't claustrophobic. Still, her breath quickened in the warm, stale air. She set her tricorder to a silent alert if it detected lifesigns within 200 feet, then glanced behind her to make sure Potter was following. Satisfied they were good to go, she called ahead to Olaf, "Just keep climbing until we get to Deck One. Stop on this side of the hatch on Deck One. And Olafson," she said, "please do try to be quiet." Even in athletics shoes, Olafson's footsteps echoed louder than her boots as they climbed the ladders through the access tunnels.

Olaf tried to climb more quietly but Keith thought he still sounded like a herd of Denuvian Groundbeasts. They reached the top and he saw Olaf pause and look down at the lieutenant.

Desai put her finger to her lips, signalling for silence. She loved her tricorder but it couldn't replace the signal processing power of her own brain and five senses. Still, she set her tricorder to scan for anything unusual on the other side of the hatch. Nothing. She couldn't hear anything or smell anything, and the tricorder wasn't even registering trace amounts of trichloromethane. They must have only gassed Engineering. Odd. She whispered to Olafson, "It looks clear. Go ahead, but be careful."

Olaf nodded and slowly removed the access panel. It came free with a clicking sound that echoed down the jeffries tube. He grimaced but had no choice to continue. He pushed the panel through and to the side, setting it down on the regulation gray corridor floor. With one fluid movement, he ducked his head and rolled through the opening, coming up in a crouch with his phaser drawn. Deck One was home to the bridge, with the captain's ready room and the observation lounge directly off of it. However, there was another small corridor that led to a Cargo Transporter and some escape pods. That was where Olaf crouched, listening for signs of others but he heard nothing.

"Clear," he whispered.

Desai climbed out of the jeffries tube and into the corridor, leaving room for Potter to follow. It took a moment for her to get her bearings, but by the time Potter was in the corridor she knew where they were and how to get to the Bridge. She scanned the deck again with her tricorder. No way it's going to be this easy, she thought.

Keith banged his knee against the lip of the access hatch and had to grit his teeth to avoid cursing. He pulled his phaser and pressed himself against the wall to the right. The lieutenant was running her tricorder. Wow. This was really easy! He thought.

The tricorder readings came back clear.

=^=You have failed to remain in your assigned restricted areas. All safeties have now been released. You will have five seconds to return the way you came or you will be eliminated.=^= The female voice sounded pleasant as she spoke. When she finished, Desai's tricorder chirped. Six Cardassian life signs appeared not far away. The tricorder provided the useful information that they were in the cargo transporter room, were heavily armed and armored and would reach the hallway in five seconds.

Desai steadied her autonomic adrenal response before it could completely flood her system, but still had to ride a wave of epinephrine and glucose. She barked at the two crewmen, "Six Cardassians on their way." She pointed to the cargo transporter room and moved behind the men with the ranged weapons. She wished she had a phaser. Shoving the tricorder into her belt, she rooted herself behind Olafson in a perfect backstance, balanced between sthira--effort--and sukham--ease, ready for hand-to-hand. In that moment of calm before the storm, a tiny corner of her brain was processing the readings from the tricorder. Something wasn't quite right. But now they were outnumbered two to one and her mind was counting down the seconds.

In a voice completely under her control she told the men, "Focus your fire on the door. They're coming through..... Now."

Olaf stood with his shoulder to the wall of the corridor trying to hide behind a break in the wall, but only a third of his body was hidden. The Lieutenant behind him, he raised his phaser at the door and as it opened he identified two Cardassians before firing at the first two. Olaf fired three shots in rapid succession, the first missed short and the other two found their marks. With that the Cardassian retreated to behind the door and started to return fire. "We have to move ma'am. We are in the open here."

"I'll follow you. Let's try and get to the Bridge if we can." Desai pointed down the corridor. "That way."

The corridor leading to the bridge entry was not long. Deck one wasn't big at all. When they reached the door, Oalf in front, Desai in the middle and Potter crab walking backwards, Olaf cursed. "There's still some kind of force field blocking the way," he said. He started tapping at the control. Potter glanced over his shoulder to see what was going on and then, just as his eyes flicked back to the corridor, a bolt of orange fire reached out and flickered across his neck.

Desai felt the heat of the phaser blast as it missed her by centimeters, and when Potter crumpled forward she caught him. With a quick shift of her hips she was behind the injured man with her arms under his shoulders, dragging him away. But the hallway was short, and not nearly far enough away from the exchange of phaser fire that was now six Cardassians against Olaf, alone.

The fighting begins in earnest again! The cliffhanger ending was a tense and memorable setup for these characters as they join the Battle of the Bridge later on.
