Personal History Sunan's father was a loyal aid to Cardassian Dissidence leader Teneky Ghemor. He was killed helping Ghemor escape the planet when Sunan was 11 years old.

Sunan and her mother were, of course, arrested on the implication that they were involved with the Dissidence and supported Ghemor. They were summarily stripped of home, rank, and honor, and exiled from Cardassia after a very public trial.

The next several years of Sunan's early life were spent in hiding with her mother with various members of the Cardassian underground, on and off of Cardassia Prime. Sunan's mother Akaria had worked for the Obsidian Order and had deep ties with the organization right up until its dissolution. She was deeply concerned with Cardassian interests, but understood that intrigue and politics were a double edged sword. She taught her daughter the value of subterfuge, but also of honor.

In the resulting chaos of the downfall of Cardassian society as it had been known, Sunan and her mother joined Legate Damar's Cardassian Liberation Front. However, before the penultimate confrontation with the Jem'Hadar, Akaria ordered her daughter away to safety, despite Sunan's strong objections. She was smuggled aboard a ship fleeing the quadrant and didn't know where she would end up until she arrived on Earth to meet her adoptive "uncle," an Obsidian Order agent cosmetically disguised as a human. Peter Juliano (previously Gfok Maron) took her in on the pretense that she was his sister's step-daughter fleeing the violence on Cardassia.

Accustomed to a life on the run by this point, Sunan adapted to life on Earth, hoping to hear news that she could rejoin her mother. The last message she received from Akaria was a coded command for Sunan to enlist in Starfleet and look for opportunities to rise in rank and aid in cooperation between Cardassia and the Federation.

The adjustment to having a permanent, settled, "safe" life was complicated by her presence among aliens and her hidden past, with a side of survivor's guilt. She found humans insufferably optimistic and gullible, especially since most humans on Earth hadn't seen much of war or struggle. Enlisting in Starfleet gave her a direction for her focus and anger, but didn't dim it. She refused to make friends and seemed to look for trouble.
